Welcome

A couple holding hands gazes at the mountain skylineThere are certain experiences in life that cannot be duplicated. Sitting before a breath-taking view on a porch above a garden in full bloom. Walking along moss-lined trails -- underneath 20' blooming rhododendron that span overhead like a cathedral ceiling. Wrapping yourself in a hand-woven coverlet, listening to spring showers as you warm your toes and read by firelight.

The Swag is a place for rest, rejuvenation, discovery, and creation. Built out of century-old hand hewn logs and located atop a 5,000 foot mountain, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just a step beyond our backyard. With wonderful panoramic views, we are located just outside of Waynesville, North Carolina (about 50 minutes west of Asheville). Note: Please do not use a GPS system to find us. Instead, use the directions on our website.

We now have the latest fall photographs of the Swag for this season - Click Here.

Check out the winter panoramas taken from the Swag's front porch and from Hemphill Bald. Please note that you must have the Quicktime plugin installed on your computer to view these panoramic photos.

If you want to see what The Swag looks like right now, see our webcam. For another view of our mountain ridge please take a look at the webcam of our neighbors at The Purchase Knob.

A Short History of The Swag

The Swag was originally designed as a family and spiritual retreat by owners Dan and Deener Matthews.

In 1982, the Matthews opened The Swag up to the public. This refuge is an award-winning Guest House Hotel surrounded by 250 acres.

Editorial and Travel Writer Information

Our "Media Relations" section provides background, photography and more. For details on visits for writers with confirmed assignments, contact Tom Swanson, media relations, at tom@swanson-pri.com.

"Explaining to friends and family why we should want to thank an "innkeeper", when, after all, we have been "paying customers", is yet another mark of the extraordinary place that you and your very professional staff have created and maintained. To be sure, we can not thank you enough for the thought, the care and the grace with which you treated us as your guests. The difficulty comes in trying to capture the essence of the experience...to convey in words the sense of belonging, peace and comfort that we shared, while sitting in a chair at the Knob; hiking silently over the leaves; or simply sitting and watching the sunrise over the mountains from our warm and cozy room."
